Devised processes work best when they are not a democracy. The director/lead devisor’s job is to craft a workshop process that yields the most variety of ideas. This early act of facilitating the group dynamics as well as the evolution of content demands strong attention to detail and planning. The careful craft of designing a workshop process that allows for the greatest amount of exploration while still providing just enough structure to work against, is what allows devisors the ability to come up with so many exciting and innovative ideas in form and content. Once these ideas are generated, the job of the lead devisor is to advance the project by making strong decisive choices while continuing to maintain an atmosphere of collaboration and artistry. I utilize my training in Tectonic Theatre Project’s Moment Work approach to develop new devised works.
